Norske Moseprodukter A/S (Norwegian Moss
Products Inc.) was incorporated in 1979 and is located in Rendalen county where
it has an 8.000 m2 production facility.
Rendalen is the largest community in southern Norway, covering 3.200 km2 located
half way between Oslo and Trondheim.
Norwegian Moss Products Inc. started its present production in 1984 and is one
of the largest export industries in the Österdalen district.
Moss for decoration is exported to all major parts of the world, the largest
market being Central Europe and Scandinavia.
Our raw material has been marketed under a variety of names.
Although actually a lichen, we usually refer to "kvitkrull" as a Moss, following
the local name for the product. However, the correct latin name is Cladonia
Stellaris or reindeer moss in Norwegian. This indigenous moss from the Norwegian
forest and mountain areas has been used for decorative purposes over hundreds of
years.
Treated and coloured moss combined with treated natural moss is a sophisticated
raw material suitable for making creations of multiple variations and settings.
NMP Inc. collects the moss from the vast forests of Österdalen where a careful,
controlled harvesting is of vital importance. The forest floor is vulnerable and
must be treated with great care to leave as few traces as possible. Our 150
harvesters are all well versed in protecting the landscape (and the surroundings)
without leaving any tell tale sores while handpicking the moss.
Our product is treated to remain soft, pliable and easy to work with. However,
if the relative humidity falls below 50% the moss becomes hard and brittle.
Fortunately it will regain its suppleness when it regain its original moisture.
For storage purposes, moss should be kept in a cold-store or cellar.
Our Reindeer Moss is available to Wholesalers, Distributors, and Manufacturers.
Treatment and softening of the moss is done without addition of any toxic or
dangerous chemicals or components. The treatment itself tends to reduce
combustion. SINTEF, Norways Pyrotechnical Institute has tested the
inflammability of the treated moss and has found that: “the moss can not be
ignited with a match.”
